Where the river Thames begins and history is woven in wool, the Cotswolds is one of the most gentle and picturesque of English landscapes. No area of comparable size in Britain has more enchanting small towns and villages than the Cotswolds. Little appears to have changed – the Roman roads still run as straight as ever, the magnificent churches, built with the wealth of the medieval wool trade, still dominate the countryside; picture-book villages, framed in the local honey-coloured limestone, shelter unobtrusively in peaceful valleys made by crystal-clear streams.
Picturesque English landscapes
In this rural landscape of rolling hills and warm dry-stone walls, fields become a sea of corn in summer while village gardens abound with fragrant honeysuckle, rambling roses, towering hollyhocks, delicate clematis and ever-present wisteria. Life is still lived at a gentle, unhurried pace. Here you will discover charming market towns that were once important Roman settlements, and sleepy villages that thrived on the cottage weaving industry based on the fleece. It is hard to imagine a place more tranquil than the Cotswolds.
Geologically, the Cotswolds were formed around 170 million years ago when the area lay beneath a warm sea — rather like Bermuda today. What remains is a fossil-rich, tilted escarpment of oolitic limestone, which gives the villages their distinctive golden glow.
With birds singing and shadows dancing among the trees, the countryside feels untouched by time. A labyrinth of winding lanes leads to picturesque cottages and villages with evocative names including Minchinhampton, Sheepscombe and even Paradise……..so, sit back, relax, and let us take you close to Paradise itself — to the Cotswolds.
